Pumpkin Patch Roundup

Every bright orange pumpkin has entered the mission field. The grass has turned brown as the leaves change fiery red and shades of pale yellow. White clouds glide above our faded pumpkin patch, across a sky of deep blue. Our long black driveway has gone a little quieter, while under a blinding autumn sun, wooden palettes age to a dull gray. Here we'll labor, counting crumbled green dollar bills.

Actually, we did very well our First Annual Pumpkin Patch. We welcomed hundreds and hundreds of families, and sold more than a thousand pumpkins of all shapes and sizes. We had a huge number of volunteers from the congregation, preschool parents, community service students, the youth group, OWLS, friends and staff. We even had more than a few customers pitch in to help unload one of our trucks. We set up the bounce house, gave away snow cones and cotton candy for free. Every customer received a card with service times and an Epiphany brochure, and Pastor had an opportunity to personally introduce his ministry. We all have our stories to reflect on, for myself I heard from a few little faces, “We’ve pass by here all the time, but we’ve never been here”, so we more than succeeded in introducing ourselves to our neighbors.

The majority of the money we collected goes to our partner and supplier, farmer Richard Hamby for his products. Richard created Pumpkin Patch USA more than thirty one years ago with a handshake, supplying pumpkins for a single church in North Carolina. Their ministry has now grown to help more than thirteen hundred churches all across the country raise more than three million dollars each year. During harvest time, as employers, they help several hundred Navajo families working the fields of New Mexico. Our earnings measured will be at least fifteen hundred dollars for total sales exceeding five thousand dollars.

More importantly, for a brief moment each pumpkin was balanced at the intersection of two eternities, the past and the future. In that moment, the present, He brought all of us together, a church and its neighbors, to change each of our lives for the better, all in His plan. People joined together to spread the Word. In the caring and loving hands of individuals these bright orange vegetables have already change lives. I can’t imagine a greater miracle for a small little church set so far back from the road.
